Look Ma, No Wires!

One of the nice things about living on a single floor was our Wi-Fi signal was never a problem. Recently we moved to a 2 floor layout. Now the first floor signal is good (our Wi-Fi router is there), but the signal upstairs is spotty and inconsistent. I am not handy and hate seeing wires so I was not fond of the idea of running a cable upstairs.

I spent some time Googling "How to get WiFi to second floor of house" and "How to extend WiFi signal" and "increase WiFi signal," but didn't find anything satisfactory. I resigned myself to this inconvenience and had moved on to other home projects, but then, just the other day I stumbled upon the perfect EZPZ solution. They are called Powerline adapters and they use your home's electrical wiring to transfer an Internet signal between rooms.

Setup couldn't be any easier! You get 2 adapters.

1. Plug the first adapter into an outlet.
2. Using the included internet cable, connect the first adapter to your wireless router.
3. Plug the second adapter in a different room where you need internet.
4. Use the included internet cable, connect the second adapter to a device that needs a signal (for example, a laptop).

In my case, I put the second adapter upstairs and connected it to a second wireless router that sends a nice strong Wi-Fi signal to the entire second floor. Problem solved!

P.S. I've been told by some coworkers that the cable guy told them that Wi-Fi goes down so if you can, installing your router on the second floor may help.

Where Ideas Go To Die

Ever have an amazing idea you can't pursue in that moment? If you are like me, more often than not you don't come back to it. You might even struggle to remember it at all. Ever wake up from a vivid dream you swear could make a great movie, only to have it fade away like so much smoke? Welcome to the cemetery of lost ideas.

There is an EZPZ way to capture your musings, potential screenplays and other ideas and it is right under your nose. The Voice Notes recording functionality on your phone is a simple way to memorialize ideas.

This has several advantages. It is hands-free and you can dictate while walking or driving. Not terribly safe, but safer than typing! Also, the mere process of speaking your ideas out loud makes it more likely that you will remember them. Finally, playing back your ideas and listening to them can be a helpful mirror by which you can evaluate, refine, and improve them.

So the next time you have the next big idea, a great joke or comeback, record it!

The Tech That Saved Our Marriage

I have an uncle who without fail, falls asleep at every family gathering. My cousin has inherited this super-power. A sleep gene must run through our family because I'm also someone who can fall asleep under almost any conditions.

Noise? Check.
Caffeine? Check.
Exercise? Check.

On the flip side, my wife is a very light sleeper. Couple that with my construction site-like snoring and "Houston, we have a problem." My sleep apnea concertos were preventing her from getting a good night's sleep and understandably, she was not happy about it. I'd get pushed and poked at night, but wake up totally unaware and refreshed. You could not say the same for her. I was informed that this state of affairs was NOT going to be okay.

And so began our journey through snoring prevention land.

Sleep on your side? Check.
Special pillow? Check.
Nose-strips? Check.

None of these put a significant dent in my snoring. Then, a ray of hope appeared. We heard about a snoring mouthpiece made by your dentist that supposedly works wonders. It's molded to your teeth and holds your lower jaw slightly forward to minimize snoring. Nothing else had really worked so we asked our dentist to make one. There was a fitting and it wasn't the most comfortable thing to sleep with, but it worked!

Now we can both get a good night's sleep and I can bother my wife in more conscious and intentional ways! I highly recommend this device for you or your significant other (depending on who is the snorer).

Changed our lives!
